The Spiritual Neurodivergent: Where Sensitivity Meets Psychic Gifts

Sensitivity: Neurodivergence, Empathy, and Spiritual Gifts

First Things First:
This isn’t medical or diagnostic advice. If you’re struggling, please reach out to a healthcare professional.

I’ve had this discussion with many of my clients about how there are many energetic similarities between clairsentients and neurodivergent individuals, and it’s my belief they are very “in-tune.” It also seems as though we share many of their characteristics. I’m not saying neurodivergence (like ADHD, autism, bipolar, OCD) and spiritual sensitivity (like clairsentience/empathy) are the same—I just find the similarities interesting.

Many of you who know me know I’m a rabbit-hole thinker—I’ll analyze something down to the atom 🤓. That being said, I’ve gotta chart. Think of this as a map—not a label.

The Overlap: Mirroring Traits

Breaking it down:

Trait Neurodivergent Experience Spiritual/Empath Experience
Deep Focus ADHD hyperfixation (also OCD and autism spectrum) “Downloads” of insight or sudden knowing.
Overwhelm in Crowds Autism sensory overload (ADHD overstimulation, bipolar mania) Absorbing others’ emotions/energy and “processing” it.
Emotional Waves Bipolar mood shifts Feeling collective energy shifts.
Need for Order OCD rituals / Autism routines Energetic hygiene (cleansing, grounding) or ritual order for stability.
Anxious “Downs” ADHD paralysis / Depression fatigue (OCD, bipolar lows) Spiritual “low vibes” or energy depletion.

Key Point: These parallels don’t mean one is the other—just that sensitivity shows up in many forms.

How They Can Look Alike

The Brain’s Role:

  • Autistic brains often process more sensory details. Clairsentients/empaths describe the same—noticing subtle energies.
  • ADHD brains jump quickly between thoughts. Some empaths call this “psychic noise” or rapid intuition. (It makes me feel like a mad scientist with an overload of info.)

Cultural Insight:

  • Indigenous traditions might see ADHD hyperfocus as “tracker’s awareness” or autism sensitivity as “spiritually attuned” (seers).
  • Our society calls these traits “disorders” when they don’t fit the system (*like traditional school environments or 8-hour desk jobs*).
  • Science says these are just brain differences—but “difference” doesn’t mean something’s wrong.

The Big Difference: Diagnosis vs. Spiritual Gifts

Neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, etc.):
Lifelong brain wiring affecting focus, sensory input, or emotional regulation.

Clairsentience/Empathy:
A skill (innate and learned) to sense energy/intentions beyond the physical.

Many spiritually sensitive people get diagnosed with ADHD/autism/OCD because:

  • The energy they absorb looks like “distraction” or “overreaction.”
  • The need for solitude (to block energy) seems like “social anxiety.”

Example:

  • An autistic person might avoid crowds due to sensory pain.
  • An empath might avoid crowds because they feel everyone’s emotions or are affected by collective energy shifts.

End Result: Both withdraw. Root cause: Different.

How to Tell the Difference: Neurodivergence vs. Spiritual Sensitivity

Getting Real. Is it neurodivergent wiring or energetic absorption when overwhelmed? Quick Check:

  • Does it shift after energy cleansing?
      • My take: It’s not instant—like meditation, it’s a process. Right after a cleanse, you might feel clearer (like shaking off grogginess after deep sleep), but full relief can take up to 24 hours. You’re in a transitional state; remind yourself this is temporary. Control the mind, track the timeline. Yes, some do get quick relief.
      • Neurodivergent overwhelm is often tied to concrete triggers (e.g., fluorescent lights, sudden schedule changes) and may need sensory adjustments or clinical tools—not my area.
  • Hearing “noise”?
    • ADHD thought-jumping feels internal—your brain’s flipping stations.
    • Psychic “noise” often feels external—like static coming in and out, or tuning into a radio. (In my experience, it’s like time stops for a minute, accompanied by quick sudden visions—but it feels much longer.)
  • Test it: Try a grounding ritual (see my blog Centering and Grounding, salt bath, shielding visualization). If your symptoms ease even 30ish%, there’s likely an energetic layer. If not—it’s okay. Honor your neurotype’s needs.

When Downsides Overlap: Anxiety, Burnout, and More

Challenge Neurodivergent Spiritual/Empath
Anxiety OCD looping, ADHD overwhelm “Psychic attack” fears or energy drains.
Burnout Autistic shutdown Empath exhaustion (from absorbing too much or being siphoned—or depletion from others “logged into” us).
Sleep Issues ADHD restless mind Spiritual “downloads” keeping you awake (common during “witching hours”).

Note: If anxiety or moods disrupt your life, talk to a doctor. Spiritual practices support health; they don’t replace it. We should always honor both to find balance.

For Those Who Feel “Different”

If you’re neurodivergent and spiritually sensitive:

  • Your “hyperfocus” might be your soul latching onto truth.
  • Your routines could be unconscious energetic protection.
  • Your meltdowns might blend sensory overload and spiritual overwhelm.

Grounding Tip:
Try physical anchors (bare feet on grass, salt baths/showers) to calm both your nervous system and energy field.

Resources for the Curious

For those who want to dive deeper:

  1. Book: The Empath’s Survival Guide by Dr. Judith Orloff (explores overlaps between sensitivity and neurodivergence).
  2. Study: “Sensory Processing Sensitivity in the Context of Environmental Sensitivity” (Aron et al., 2012) (links heightened sensitivity to both spiritual and neurobiological traits).

Final Thoughts

The world calls sensitive people “too much” or “a struggle.” Food for thought: I heard somewhere—”The sun doesn’t apologize for shining”—and neither should you.

Disclaimer (With Love):
If you’re suffering, seek support. Spiritual gifts are real, but so are medical needs. Honor both.
